Haverhill Fencers covers Sawston and the villages around it - new fencing, storm repairs, gates and decking, quoted in writing before anything starts.

Sawston is a village in South Cambridgeshire with a mix of housing styles from different periods. Haverhill Fencers works across this part of Cambridgeshire and brings the same straight, well-set posts and tidy finishes to Sawston as we do to our home base.

About Sawston

Sawston sits within easy reach of Cambridge and has grown considerably as a commuter village. It has a notable industrial and employment history, and today the village supports a wide range of residents from young families to established households.

Fencing in Sawston

Sawston has grown in waves, and the fencing needs of the village reflect that variety. Postwar semis and terraces need sturdy timber boundaries that give real privacy without overloading shallow foundations. Newer detached homes on the edges of the village often want something that looks as good from the front as it does from the garden. We work with both, selecting post depths, panel styles, and fixing methods that suit the ground and the property.

Why Good Fencing Matters

A well-built fence does more than mark a boundary. It controls access, deters opportunistic intruders, keeps children and pets safe, and gives you a garden you can actually use without a neighbour's line of sight. A poorly built fence is the opposite: leaning posts, panels that rattle in the wind, and gaps that appear within a year. The difference almost always comes down to post depth and concrete mix, not the panel itself.

Exposed stretches of garden catch wind more than many people expect. A fence set too shallow or fixed without proper concrete will start to lean after the first hard autumn blow. We set posts to the correct depth for the panel height and use a mixed concrete collar rather than a dry postcrete pour, which gives a more reliable result in the long run.

Close-Board and Feather Edge Fencing

Feather edge close-board fencing is a common choice for rear garden boundaries. Individual feather edge boards are fixed vertically to arris rails, overlapping slightly, so the fence moves with minor post flex rather than cracking. A gravel board along the base keeps the timber clear of damp ground and extends the life of the fence considerably.

Close-board panels run from around 1.2 metres up to 1.8 metres in height. For a typical rear boundary on a postwar semi, 1.8 metre panels with concrete posts give solid privacy and last well. We can also add a trellis topper where a neighbour has agreed the arrangement, giving extra height without the visual weight of solid board.

Wooden Fence Panels

Lap panels are cheaper to buy than feather edge board, but they are also less durable. The horizontal overlap traps moisture and the thin timber can split and warp. They suit temporary or low-priority boundaries, but for a main garden boundary we would always recommend feather edge board or a solid panel with a timber frame instead. Pressure-treated timber throughout is the baseline - untreated softwood in ground contact will fail quickly regardless of how well it is fixed.

Picket Fencing

Picket fencing suits front gardens, where a low, open boundary fits the streetscape better than a solid panel. Traditional pale-topped pickets on a treated rail are hardwearing and can be painted or left to silver naturally. Heights typically run between 0.9 and 1.2 metres for front boundaries. If you want something with a more individual feel, we can cut custom picket profiles to order.

Post and Rail Fencing

Rural properties often include paddocks, smallholdings, and larger plots where a post-and-rail or stock fence is more practical than a close-board boundary. Post and rail uses round or square treated posts with two or three horizontal rails mortised or nailed in place. It is cost-effective over longer runs and suits horse paddocks and livestock enclosures well. For gardens that border open land, post and rail is also a useful outer boundary before a hedgerow establishes.

Stock Fencing

Stock fencing combines a wire mesh strained between treated timber posts, often with a single strand of barbed or plain wire along the top. It keeps livestock contained without the cost of a full close-board run. For properties with paddocks or field boundaries in the Sawston area, we can supply and fit appropriate stock fencing to suit the animals involved and the ground conditions.

Driveway Gates

A driveway gate is one of the most visible parts of a front boundary and should be in keeping with the style of the fence and the house. We fit both single and double timber gates in a range of styles, from simple framed and ledged gates to more decorative designs. The gate posts and hinges carry the weight, so these need to be properly concreted in and fitted with heavy-duty ironmongery. A gate that drops and drags on the ground almost always comes back to inadequate post fixing at the outset.

For some homes, automated driveway gates are increasingly popular. We can discuss the structural groundwork needed to support an automated system and work alongside an automation specialist where required.

Acoustic Fencing

Some properties sit close to busier roads or commercial areas where road noise is noticeable. Acoustic fencing uses denser, thicker boards - typically tongue and groove rather than feather edge - combined with a concrete or composite base, to reduce sound transmission. A properly specified acoustic fence can take the edge off road noise, though it works best when combined with a solid close-board design with no gaps at the base or between boards.

Fence Repairs

A common problem in established gardens is fence damage where the post has rotted at ground level while the panels themselves are still usable. Rather than replacing the entire run, it is often possible to fit a steel post repair spike over the old stump, set a new post, and reuse the existing panels. This saves material and cost. We assess each section before recommending a repair or replacement approach - there is no point spending money on new panels if the existing boards are sound.

Wind damage to close-board panels is usually localised: a snapped arris rail or a few loose boards rather than a full panel failure. Rail repairs and board replacements are a straightforward job when the post is still solid and plumb.

Bespoke Fencing

Not every boundary is a standard run. Sloping gardens, irregular plot shapes, or a specific design brief all call for fencing that is made to measure rather than cut from a standard panel. We can build stepped or raked panels, design curved runs, and match profiles to existing fencing on adjacent boundaries. If you have a specific requirement, bring it to us and we will give you a practical assessment of what is achievable and at what cost.
