Fences, gates and garden joinery for Great Dunmow homes and sites. Same crew, same standard, fixed written quotes.
Haverhill Fencers covers Great Dunmow and the villages around it - new fencing, storm repairs, gates and decking, quoted in writing before anything starts.
Great Dunmow is a prosperous market town in mid-Essex with a strong character of its own - a historic high street, a mix of older cottages and Georgian townhouses near the centre. The older parts of town present close-board replacements and gate repairs on properties where the original fencing has simply reached the end of its life.
We travel to Great Dunmow from our Haverhill base, covering the town and the villages around it with the same direct, no-fuss approach.

Great Dunmow lies in the upper valley of the River Chelmer in mid-Essex.
We cover Great Dunmow and work across the wider area stretching back towards our Haverhill base - through villages including Steeple Bumpstead, Ridgewell, Stambourne, and Kedington. Great Dunmow has grown considerably and the town now has a wide variety of property types, from period buildings near the town centre through to large modern estates on its outskirts. Each type of property brings its own fencing requirements.
A fence that is properly installed, with posts set correctly in concrete and the right timber specification for the exposure and use, will outlast a cheaply installed alternative by many years. The failure point on almost every timber fence is the post, specifically the section at and just below ground level where moisture causes rot. Getting the post right - the right timber treatment, the right concrete mix, the right depth - is what separates a fence that lasts from one that fails in three winters.
Beyond longevity, a fence serves practical purposes: it defines your legal boundary clearly, it gives your garden real privacy, and it keeps children and pets in and uninvited visitors out. A properly built fence removes uncertainty about the boundary.
Feather-edge close-board fencing is built on site - posts concreted in, arris rails fixed between them, and individual tapered boards nailed with an overlap. Because each board is a separate component, replacing a split or damaged board is straightforward and does not require taking the whole run apart. Standard heights for rear garden boundaries are 1.5 or 1.8 metres.
A close-board fence at 1.8 metres provides full privacy from a standing position. Where the ground is level, each board can be cut to an even height at the top. On a slope, the boards can be raked to follow the ground rather than stepping down in sections, which gives a cleaner finish on the longer runs you find on some of Great Dunmow's newer estate plots.
Panel fencing is a common choice for straightforward rear gardens on newer properties. Lapped timber panels - either smooth-faced or with a waney-lap pattern - fit into slotted posts or are screwed to brackets. They install quickly and give a neat, uniform look. The main drawback is that they are less repairable than close-board: a damaged section means removing and replacing the whole panel.
Wind is also more of a problem with solid panels than with close-board, because a large panel in a strong gale acts as a sail. If the site is open to the wind, we will discuss whether a more breathable panel design or a close-board construction would serve better.
For paddocks, larger gardens, and field boundaries in the villages around Great Dunmow, post and rail is the practical standard. It marks the boundary clearly, allows air and light through, and with pressure-treated posts can stand for many years without significant maintenance. Three-rail post and rail is typical for horse paddocks; two-rail suits lighter stock or a garden boundary where the view is more important than containment.
Morticed post and rail systems, where the rails slot into holes cut through the post, look more finished and resist racking better than nailed-on sawn rail. On a long, visible run they are worth the additional cost.
For agricultural boundaries and paddocks, stock fencing with a strained wire mesh between timber or steel posts is effective and economical over a long run. The correct specification depends on the animal being contained - a mesh that suits sheep is not sufficient for cattle, and neither will contain a determined horse on its own. Post and rail backed with a suitable wire mesh is the accepted standard for equestrian use across this part of Essex.
Picket fencing suits the older, more traditional parts of Great Dunmow particularly well. We cut and fit to the height and spacing you need. Pressure-treated timber from the outset means minimal maintenance, but if you want the traditional white-painted look, that is straightforward - we can pre-prime the timber before the paint goes on.
Timber driveway gates suit the character of both older and newer properties in Great Dunmow. We make and hang single and double gates in pressure-treated softwood or hardwood, to whatever width the opening requires. Getting the gate posts right is critical: they need to be set deep and in a large concrete base to take the leverage of the gate over time. A gate post that moves even slightly means a gate that will not shut properly within a year.
If you are replacing gates on existing masonry piers, we will check the piers are plumb and sound before hanging. A new gate on a leaning pier will never work as it should.
Repair work is often the most cost-effective route when the boards and rails are still sound but one or more posts have rotted off. A common problem on older estates is concrete posts that have cracked longitudinally, allowing water to track down to the base. Timber posts in poor ground conditions or in very wet soil can rot within ten years of installation if they were not treated to the right standard originally. When we assess a run for repair, we will tell you honestly whether the remaining sections are worth keeping or whether replacement makes more sense over a five-to-ten-year horizon.
Acoustic fence panels are significantly heavier and denser than standard timber panels and require more substantial posts and foundations. When installed correctly with no gaps at the base, they can reduce noise levels meaningfully. The most common installation mistake is leaving a gap between the bottom of the fence and the ground, which allows sound to travel underneath - eliminating that gap is as important as the panel specification itself.
Some jobs do not fit a standard solution. A boundary that changes level across its run, a curved garden, a fence that needs to match an existing style on a period property, or a commercial installation requiring specific dimensions - we take these on and design the solution before pricing it. If you have a sketch or a set of measurements, bring them. If you are not sure yet what is needed, a site visit will give us both enough information to work from.
We price every job individually after a site visit. There are no guesses from a photograph - we measure the run and confirm the specification. Call us to arrange a visit at a time that suits you.
